Sustainable agriculture and food security program

This program seeks to ensure food security while protecting the environment and promoting sustainable livelihoods of smallholder farmers and vulnerable populations. Through this program, we aim to create food systems that are both environmentally sound and economically viable, ensuring food security for present and future generations. The program hinges on four components: food security, sustainable livelihoods, climate change adaptation/mitigation, and conservation of natural resources. Specifically, the program seeks to:

  • ensure that smallholder farmers and vulnerable populations have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food;
  • support farmers and communities by promoting economic opportunities and social equity; and
  • Promote healthy soils, sustainable water management, and biodiversity, through sustainable farming practices.

It targets smallholder farmers, who are crucial to global food production, and vulnerable populations who are at risk of hunger and malnutrition.

The program aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goal 2: “End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”.

The following strategies and approaches will be used to achieve the goal and objectives of the program:

  • Promoting sustainable agricultural practices such as: crop diversification, organic farming, water conservation, soil health management, agroforestry;
  • Strengthening food systems through market linkages, value chain development, and nutrition education;
  • Promoting Climate resilience through climate-smart agriculture, resilient crops; and
  • Promoting capacity building through training and extension services, and research and innovation.
